By now the entire world knows that Martina Navratilova popped the question to her longtime love, girlfriend Julia Lemigova – who said yes. However, people have been speculating as to how the proposal went down and what made the famous tennis star finally want to propose to her lady love. For Navratilova, however, the question of if she would ever propose was never an issue. She was always worried about how and when she’d do it.

“Originally it wasn’t the idea to do it at the U.S. Open, on the Jumbotron and all that, but then it was, ‘Why not? I’ve seen it in the movies.’ And it all came off, everything worked out perfectly,” said the tennis champ of her moment in time. The couple has been dating for more than 8 years, and they are more in love now than ever before. After her longtime love said yes, Navratilova popped a bottle of champagne opened and they toasted to their engagement.

“What’s been amazing is the outpouring of support from everywhere, including when I was walking through the stadium afterwards with people saying, ‘Congratulations,’ people on the street saying congratulations and the Twitter outpouring has been unbelievably supportive. The changes in people’s attitudes on gay marriage is amazing. You put it out to the world and it already feels like we’re married because the whole world knows,” the grand-slam winner declares.

She goes onto talk about what a special person her new fiancé is, calling her a genuinely nice person, special on both the inside and the outside. Apparently, the two are very similar. They were raised similarly and they have the same values and morals in life, which makes for a pretty easy-going relationship in their household. Congratulations to the 59-time Grand Slam champion and her soon-to-be wife.
