Lossiemouth the pick of a Mullins trio

It will be a big surprise if trainer Willie Mullins does not win this year’s Triumph Hurdle. He has the three leading players for the 1.30pm in LOSSIEMOUTH, Blood Destiny and Gala Marceau.

After a great start to the week, Paul Townend should be full of confidence and he has opted to partner Lossiemouth, which could be a big clue about the pecking order of those horses.

The Irish filly was beaten by Gala Marceau last time out at the Dublin Racing Festival, but she can reverse that form, as the race just did not pan out for her at Leopardstown.

There has been a lot of talk about Lossiemouth for the Triumph Hurdle from very early on in the season. She could turn into one of Mullins’s biggest stable stars over the next few years.

Hunters Yarn likely to have plenty in hand on handicapper

State Man won the County Hurdle for Mullins 12 months ago and he has gone on to prove himself to be one of the leading 2m hurdlers in the sport. If it were not for the magnificent Constitution Hill, he would be a Champion Hurdle winner – and HUNTERS YARN could go on to follow a similar path to his stablemate.

The six-year-old has been victorious in his previous two races, including a Listed success at Navan (2m). He won that contest quite cosily under the hands of Townend.

The handicapper has given the Irish horse a mark of 147 for the off at 2.10pm, but with plenty more likely under the bonnet it may not be enough to stop him from giving his trainer a seventh win in this contest.

Galopin can prove to be the champ in Gold Cup

Ever since the early stages of his novice chase campaign, GALOPIN DES CHAMPS has looked like a future Gold Cup winner. He has gone on to fulfil his potential with an excellent second season over fences. He has won the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase and Irish Gold Cup in his two appearances so far.

The seven-year-old ticks every box you would look for in a Gold Cup horse. He has the speed to stretch away from his rivals when needed, and proved he can stay 3m at Leopardstown. Apart from his final fence error at Cheltenham 12 months ago, he jumps well.

This is an excellent renewal of the blue riband event at 3.30pm – but if the real Galopin Des Champs turns up, his rivals will be fighting it out for second place.

Vaucelet will outstay the field in Hunters Chase

With five wins from his previous six outings, VAUCELET has done little wrong on the track. He scored over the extended 3m 3f trip at Stratford last year, so he has shown he has the stamina for this race.

The improving eight-year-old is making his debut at the Cheltenham Festival this year and, if he runs to form, it will be a winning appearance in the 4.10pm, the most prestigious Hunters Chase contest of the season.
